We have a new #1 after one of the best games of the year. St. John Bosco makes their way back to the top spot after their historic comeback over Mater Dei. The Braves went down 23 before rolled off 34 unanswered to shock the Monarchs. This year played out as the opposite of last year between these same two teams when Bosco easily won the regular season matchup and Mater Dei won the playoff rematch. We had a feeling these two teams would split again this year. That is why we had the Braves #1 in the preseason as we thought the revenge factor would play out in the regular season game. It didn’t. The Braves saved it up for when it really mattered. We were the only expert to pick the Braves this week because we just didn’t see a player and team as talented as DJ Uiagalelei and the Braves losing three in a row to the same team. That is very hard for any team to do over an evenly matched team. For now the Braves are the #1 team in the country but that is no guarantee that they will end up #1 as last year showed. There is still a lot of football to be played.

In Texas we had another revenge game where the team that lost the regular season game won when it mattered with North Shore trouncing Katy. The Mustangs were pretty beat up for that regular season matchup and now are close to full strength. It showed in this game as they made it look easy. The Mustangs will have something to say about who the eventual National Champion is this year. We would be lying if we said we aren’t hoping for a rematch of the all time classic with Duncanville from the state title game last year.

There was a slight upset in Florida with Edgewater going on the road and beating Armwood. In the Expert Pick’em column it was mentioned this was a huge letdown spot for the Hawks coming off their big win over Lakeland. Scott thought playing at home would help the Hawks get the victory but that did not prove to be the case. The win moves the Eagles into the rankings this week ahead of their big showdown with #8 St. Thomas Aquinas. Another note from Florida. The FHSAA got exactly what they wanted when they broke up the Miami schools and put them in different classifications as Booker T. Washington, Miami Central and Miami Northwestern all made the title game.

There was an upset in Ohio as well with Pickerington Central knocking off previously unbeaten Mentor. This was another classic letdown spot as the Cardinals were coming off the big win over St. Edward. The Tigers big win moves them into the rankings this week as the only Ohio team. To stay there the Tigers will have to avoid having a letdown versus a good Elder team in the finals.
